When to Replace Windows: 5 Clear Signs Your Home Needs an Upgrade

Written by | Return to Latest News

After 30 years of fitting windows across Northern Ireland, we at Turkington Windows know that spotting the right time to replace your windows isn’t always easy. Making the choice to replace them is a big decision, and we want to help you make the right one.

We’ve put together this blog to help you decide when it’s time for new windows based on what we’ve learned from helping thousands of homeowners across Belfast and beyond.

1. Draughts and High Energy Bills

If you can feel cold air coming through your windows even when they’re shut, something’s wrong. This is one of the clearest signs that your windows aren’t performing anymore. If you suspect a draught from a window, you can use the candle test to determine precisely where it is. On a windy day, hold a candle flame along the inside window frame, if it flickers, that means your window is compromised.

When your windows let in cold air, your heating must work harder to keep your house warm. With energy bills continuing to rise, this could end up costing you even more than a window replacement would. Our windows have ‘A’ energy ratings, which means they are extremely energy efficient and help keep your heating bills down.

2. Condensation Between the Glass

Whilst some condensation is normal, especially in the winter, if you find condensation between the panes of your windows, it means your windows aren’t working correctly. This happens when the seal around your double glazing fails, letting moisture get trapped between the panes.

In these cases, there’s a good chance that the gas that’s meant to be between those panes (which helps keep your home warm) has probably escaped too. While you might be tempted to live with foggy windows, they’re not keeping your home as warm as they should. Not only does that reduce your comfort, but it can also increase your heating bills. Unfortunately, you can’t fix this by repairing the window. Once the seal has gone, you need new windows to solve the problem.

3. Problems with Your Window Frame

Common signs that your window frame needs attention include:

  • Visible rot, mould, or warping in the frame
  • Water leaks around the edges
  • General wear ruining the frame’s aesthetics
  • Peeling paint or discoloration
  • Signs of condensation or damp

These issues can seriously affect how well your windows work. Water getting in through damaged frames can cause dampness, and frames that aren’t sitting correctly won’t keep out draughts. Regular maintenance can help, but there comes a point when replacement is the only option.

4. Windows That Don’t Function

If your windows stick and are hard to open or close, it’s usually because the mechanism is wearing out or the frame has warped. This is particularly common in old windows that have been opened and closed thousands of times.

Good window functionality isn’t just about convenience. If the frame isn’t flush, it’s likely letting air in, making your home colder and forcing you to rely on your heating. Broken windows are far less secure against intruders when they don’t close properly. A dropped frame could even compromise the lock. If you’re struggling with the basic function of your windows, it’s time to think about replacement.

5. Outdated Style

Single pane windows or older-style double glazing can make your house look dated. Older windows usually let in less natural light and don’t offer the same views as modern designs. They’re also much less efficient at keeping heat in than today’s windows.

Modern windows are designed to let in more light while keeping your home warmer. They also need less maintenance and can add value to your property.

UPVC Windows

UPVC windows remain our most popular choice. They combine practical benefits with excellent value for money and low maintenance. Our uPVC windows come with advanced security features such as multipoint locks and safety glass to keep your home secure.

Our uPVC windows achieve ‘A’ energy ratings as standard and can reach low U-values (a number that indicates how well a window keeps heat in) with double and triple glazing. This energy efficiency could shave over 25% off your yearly heating bills.

We offer several styles of window:

  • Casement Windows – Classic ‘open out’ windows, ideal for both modern and traditional homes
  • Sash Windows – Traditional sliding windows perfect for period properties
  • Flush Sash Windows – Sits flush with the frame for a modern twist on a traditional style
  • French Windows – Wide-opening windows that provide unobstructed views
  • Tilt & Turn Windows – Versatile windows that can either tilt inwards or fully open

All our windows are made to measure and fitted with high-quality double or triple glazing by our experienced window fitters. The frames are available in 10 standard colours, from classic White and Cream to authentic woodgrain finishes.

Aluminium Windows

Aluminium windows are our premium option, offering exceptional strength and a modern style. Aluminium’s strength allows for slimmer frames than uPVC, maximising the glass area and letting more natural light into your home.

Our aluminium windows feature advanced thermal break technology and achieve ‘A’ energy ratings. This superior insulation helps reduce your energy costs while protecting against condensation.

We offer these styles in aluminium:

  • Casement Windows – Classic windows with clean, minimal sightlines
  • Tilt & Turn Windows – Modern windows that can tilt or open fully
  • Heritage Windows – Designed to replicate traditional steel windows, perfect for period properties
  • Lumi Windows – Frameless design with an entirely flat, uninterrupted profile for great views

All our aluminium windows are manufactured to precise standards and feature multi-point shoot-bolt locks. They are available in any RAL colour, including dual colour options that allow different finishes inside and out. Every window comes with toughened safety glass and is fitted by our experienced installation team.
