Triple Glazing Benefits: Is It Worth the Investment for Your Home?

Written by | Return to Latest News

If you’re considering upgrading your windows, you might wonder if triple glazing is worth the extra investment. With energy bills continuing to rise, effective insulation can make a significant difference.

We’ve written this piece to explore triple glazing and show how it could benefit your home.

What is Triple Glazing?

Triple glazing uses three panes of glass instead of the two you’ll find in double glazing or the single pane of glass in older windows. Each pane is 4mm thick and set into a frame that’s either 36mm or 40mm deep. This extra depth maximises the window’s insulating properties and ensures long-term performance.

Between each pane, we fill the space with argon gas. This inert gas is much denser than regular air, making it significantly better at preventing heat transfer through your windows. The argon filling makes up 90% of the space between panes, creating an exceptional thermal barrier. We also use special warm edge spacer bars around the edges that improve heat retention compared to standard aluminium ones. These spacer bars play a crucial role in preventing heat loss around the edges of the unit.

The glass itself has a metal oxide coating called Planitherm Total + that reflects heat into the room while still letting in plenty of natural light.

How Does It Compare to Double Glazing?

Modern double glazing has been the standard for years and is still a good choice. But triple glazing takes things further. While double glazing has one space filled with argon gas, triple glazing has two, creating an extra layer of insulation. This additional barrier makes a substantial difference in how much heat your windows retain, particularly during the coldest months when your heating system is working hardest.

To put this into numbers, older double glazing might have a poor U-value (which measures heat loss) of between 2 and 2.5. Modern double glazing lowers this to about 1.2, which hits current building regulations. With our best specifications, triple glazing can achieve impressive U-values as low as 0.7. This hits Passivhaus standards – meaning the windows are so efficient that they can help create homes that need almost no heating.

For comparison, a solid brick wall typically has a U-value of around 2.0, which shows just how effective modern triple glazing can be at preventing heat loss. This improvement in thermal performance becomes particularly noticeable during extended cold spells when the extra insulation proves its worth.

The Key Benefits of Triple Glazing

Better Energy Efficiency and Lower Bills

The most obvious benefit of triple glazing is increased energy efficiency and higher energy savings. The third layer of glass and gas means less heat escapes your home. The superior insulation means your heating doesn’t have to work as hard to keep your home warm, which could save you plenty on your heating bills.

It also means less drastic heat changes in your house, which helps to prevent condensation that can lead to mould or moisture damage.

A More Comfortable Home

Triple glazing can save you money, and it makes your home more comfortable too. With standard glazing, you might notice cold spots near your windows when it’s chilly outside. Triple glazing keeps the inner pane warmer, which means the temperature in your room stays even. This makes a real difference to how comfortable your home feels in winter.

The improvement in comfort is particularly noticeable in older properties. The combination of better insulation and reduced draughts creates a more consistent indoor temperature throughout your home, eliminating those cold zones that often form near windows during winter months.

Impressive Noise Reduction

The acoustic performance of triple glazing is where many homeowners notice a benefit. The third pane of glass adds significant sound insulation, making triple glazing especially valuable if you live near a busy road or under a flight path. Even if you don’t think noise pollution is an issue, homeowners are often surprised by how much more peaceful their house is after installing triple glazing.

Added Security

Triple glazing’s extra pane of glass naturally makes windows stronger and more resistant to break-ins. Combined with our multi-point locking systems, this gives you an extra layer of security for your home. The additional thickness of the glazing unit also makes it much harder for intruders to break through, providing extra peace of mind for homeowners.

Environmental Benefits

With rising concerns about climate change, the environmental impact of our homes matters more than ever. Triple glazing’s superior insulation means you’ll use less energy to heat your home, reducing your carbon footprint. This is becoming increasingly important to potential buyers too, making it a smart investment for the future. The reduction in energy usage future-proofs your home against rising energy costs. As energy prices continue to increase, the improved efficiency of triple glazing becomes an even more valuable investment.

The UK is pushing towards ambitious Net Zero targets, which triple glazing helps to achieve.

Our Triple Glazing Options

At Turkington, we offer triple glazing in our uPVC and aluminium frames. Our uPVC windows achieve impressive energy ratings and are the go-to for energy efficiency. They’re available in several styles, including casement windows, sash windows, and tilt and turn designs, each designed to suit different property styles and personal preferences.

For a more modern look, our aluminium frames offer great views and outstanding durability. While they’re a more significant investment initially, their longevity and ability to increase property value make them cost-effective in the long term. Thermal break technology now allows aluminium to match the energy efficiency of uPVC. We offer aluminium windows in several styles, including heritage windows for traditional and period properties and the unique Lumi windows that have incredibly slim frames for great views.
