Orangery extension with brick pillars and lantern roof

Orangeries in Northern Ireland

With summer here, it’s a popular time for homeowners to invest in an extension for their property, with conservatories and orangeries in demand for making the most of the longer, brighter days. A conservatory is an ideal way to allow more light into your home, but if you want a more sophisticated style of extension an orangery is the perfect alternative.

What is an orangery?

One of the most common questions we’re asked about conservatories is — what is the difference between a conservatory and an orangery? And what exactly is an orangery? Traditionally, orangeries were grand, stately buildings used to grow orange trees and other sun-loving fruits, in large period homes in the 19th century. The brick pillars sheltered the exotic fruit trees, but large expanses of glass ensured the sun’s warmth cultivated the plants. Over time, orangeries evolved to become an extension of living space within the home as opposed to an elaborate greenhouse.

  • Better Insulation

The roof lantern and solid materials used in an orangery can sometimes provide better insulation than a conservatory that is primarily glazed.

  • Adds More Value

As they are closer to a traditional extension than conservatories are, orangeries generally add more value to your house than a conservatory.

  • Grandiose & Visually Extravagant

Orangeries are far more grandiose and visually extravagant, creating a real focal point in your home and garden, whereas conservatories tend to be more modest and classically understated.

  • Traditional Style Orangeries from Turkington Windows

Turkington Windows is an approved installer of the LivinRoom Orangery from Ultraframe Conservatories. This option uses Ultraframe’s classic roof at its heart, adding well-engineered internal framework, then plastered to give a perimeter ceiling all the way round into which down lights and speakers can be incorporated. This gives the same look of a lantern roof without the weight and extra construction, and means you can enjoy the best of both worlds with the light of a conservatory and the feel of a home extension.

  • Affordable Home Extensions from the Loggia Collection

As well as classic orangery styles, we also install the Loggia orangery, a modern building system which replaces the traditional conservatory and makes orangeries affordable. Loggia provides a thermally efficient home extension offering plastered walls with perimeter ceilings, high insulated columns and a glass roof that allows natural light to flood in. Alternatively, we can install Loggia orangeries with a solid tile roof to reduce solar glare and keep your orangery warmer in winter. With Loggia you can enjoy a beautiful new room to your home all year round which adds value to your home at a lower cost than a traditional brick built extension.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the difference between an orangery and a conservatory?

An orangery typically features more brickwork and a solid roof structure with a central glazed lantern, giving it the appearance of a traditional extension. This creates a more substantial feel than a conservatory while still allowing plenty of natural light to enter the space.

  • Can an orangery be designed to match my home?

Yes. Orangeries are designed to complement the architecture of your property, with brick-built pillars, large windows, and a roof design that echoes the style of your home. This helps create a seamless transition between the original property and the new living space.

  • What can an orangery be used for?

An orangery is a versatile addition that can be used as a dining room, living area, home office, kitchen extension, or entertaining space. Its bright, spacious design makes it ideal for creating a comfortable room that can be enjoyed throughout the year.
